Often with design jobs it's a kind of "prove it" situation, where if you want to be given more responsibility, prove you can handle what you were given first. But if you prove your capability you should be able to expand the role. Like others mentioned, if a junior position then you're now bottom of the hierarchy, and so can't expect to be a midlevel or senior in terms of authority, input, etc. Follow established conventions, use untuitive and logical processes, named layers, non-destructive edits, all that kind of thing.
As on one hand you have that four years professional experience, but on the other hand I've found that designers who have only freelanced tend to still have a lot of junior-esque traits, methods, and habits because they've never had someone to tell them what to do, clean up bad habits, or enforce best practices.Ī lot can depend on whether you end up working for a non-designer (essentially as a solo in-house), or working for another designer, but if the latter you should expect to approach your work and files with other people in mind. In your case, with four years of freelance experience, depending on how you work and your education/training you might find to be in a bit of a hybrid situation. Which is fine given their experience, but means they need to learn and grow into a professional environment before usually trusted with or capable of more responsibility and more independent roles. Juniors tend to be slow, disorganized, and crude in their methods.
